Wimbledon Championships 2021: Novak Djokovic vs. Matteo Berrettini Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2021 Wimbledon Championships as Novak Djokovic (1) meets Matteo Berrettini (7) in the Final on Sunday July 11th, 2021.

World number one Novak Djokovic is one win away from creating history, and joining Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal on 20 Grand Slam singles titles. The Serbian star has been very impressive here at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships, hardly setting a foot wrong so far. The only obstacle in his path to the title now is Italian Matteo Berrettini, the seventh seed. While Djokovic will be the favorite here to claim his sixth Wimbledon title, the Italian has also been outstanding, and will not go away easily. Can he cause the massive upset and claim his first Grand Slam title?

Novak Djokovic is ranked #1 on the ATP Tour, and is the top seed here at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships. The Serbian Superstar is one of the greatest players in the history of the sport, and has won the title here at the All-England Club six times. Apart from surprisingly losing the first set in his opening match to Jack Draper he has cruised through the draw with relative ease. He cruised past the unseeded Marton Fucsovics in the Quarter-Finals before being tested by Denis Shapovalov in the Semi-Finals, but held his nerves in the tense moments to come away with the tough straight-sets win, 7-6/7-5/7-5. Shapovalov had opportunities to win the first two sets, but just couldn’t convert his opportunities, going 1-11 on break point opportunities. Djokovic will enter this match against Matteo Berrettini as the big favorite, but knows that the Italian likely won’t let him off the hook in the same manner as Shapovalov.

Matteo Berrettini is currently ranked #9 on the ATP Tour and is the seventh seed here at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships. The Italian has been impressive here at the All-England club so far, reaching his first Major Final in convincing fashion. Berrettini has been using his huge serve and forehand to great effect here, and if those things are clicking then he surely will be a handful for world number one Novak Djokovic. He crushed Hubert Hurkacz in the Semis in four sets, in a match which really wasn’t as close as the score line suggested. While he doesn’t have much experience at this stage of the big tournaments, he has clearly worked on his mental game, a change that is evident based on how he is approaching his matches. Despite being the underdog here against Djokovic, he certainly has the firepower to make things interesting. The big question is if he can sustain it for an entire match against the world number one.

This will be the third meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour, with Djokovic leading the head to head series 2-0. The last time they met was at Roland Garros this year, with the world number one winning a tough four setter. I expect another close match, with the fast grass courts suiting Matteo Berrettini a bit better with his big game. While I think it will be a tight match, it is very difficult to see any other outcome than a Novak Djokovic victory. His focus and will to win are second to none, and it is almost impossible that he will lose at this stage of a Major to someone not named Rafael Nadal or Roger Federer. The Italian should give a good account of himself in his first Grand Slam Final, but will ultimately fall short with Novak Djokovic becoming the 2021 Wimbledon Champion.
