TennisSection previews the 2021 Toronto Open as Daniil Medvedev takes on Reilly Opelka in the Final on Sunday, August 15th, 2021.
Will it be a first Masters 1000 title for Reilly Opelka as he aims to get himself even higher up the rankings and turn his 2021 season around? Will Daniil Medvedev win his 4th Masters 1000 title and his 3rd ATP Tour title of the year as he could get himself much closer to the World No.1 spot? Both players have played some amazing tennis all week, beating big name players, but only one of them will come out victorious in this match and become the 2021 Toronto Open Champion. Who will it be?
Reilly Opelka put on another solid display as he has done all week, beating his first ever top 5 opponent in Stefanos Tsitsipas in the Semi-Final in 3 sets, 6-7/7-6/6-4. Reilly Opelka was able to find his composure and rhythm against the high intensity and heavy grounstokes Tsitsipas by returning them with some length and wearing Tsitsipas down mentally more than anything. Reilly Opelka knows he has been playing against tough opponents all week, using his big serve, especially the kick serve, and his strong forehand to get himself out of long rallies. Reilly Opelka will now meet an opponent he beat earlier this year in Daniil Medvedev and I am sure he will come out in this match ready to give it his best as he wants to win the 2021 Toronto Open, and do it by beating one the best players in the world.
Daniil Medvedev also showed a great performance in the Semi-Finals, beating the very similar opponent to Reilly Opelka, John Isner, in straight sets, 6-2/6-2. Daniil Medvedev has got an amazing return game and this was the key for his victory against Isner, wearing down the experienced American by just rallying consistently and returning his huge serve. Medvedev has been great all week and he knows that these conditions are the best for him to succeed, as he showed us in 2019 when he won 6 titles in a row in these conditions and made it to the US Open Final. Medvedev will definitely give it his all, and he’ll know what to do as Reilly Opelka is similar to John Isner, as he aims to get his 4th Masters 1000 title here at the 2021 Toronto Open.
Daniil Medvedev and Reilly Opelka have met 4 times before, with Daniil Medvedev leading the head to head 3-1. They have met 1 time this year, with Medvedev winning that match in straight sets at the French Open getting revenge for his loss to Opelka at St Petersburg last year. This is going to be a very entertaining match because they are two different types of players. Opelka has huge serve and aims to win points quite quickly, whilst Medvedev hits flat and he aims to rally and wear opponents down with his amazing return game. I expect a great battle on our hands between these two. Because this match is on hot hard court conditions, the match will favour Medvedev’s playing style of flat hitting and his stamina, however Opelka will keep things tight. I expect a long match, but Daniil Medvedev will come through victorious as he wins his 4th Masters 1000 title and gets himself strong preparation before the US Open here at the 2021 Toronto Open.
