TennisSection previews the 2021 Toronto Open as Diego Schwartzman takes on Roberto Bautista Agut in the Round of 16 on Thursday, August 12th, 2021.
Will Roberto Bautista Agut continue to impress? Will Diego Schwartzman back up his big win? This match will be an interesting one, where we have two similar style players who yet differ in many ways going head to head. Who will move on to the quarterfinals at the 2021 Toronto Open?
Diego Schwartzman has had a pretty decent year despite just dropping out of the top 10 about a month ago. At only 5’7, his results are incredibly impressive, and he does it all with consistent heavy balls, which eventually allow him to take over the point. He is not the favorite to win this match, despite being the slightly higher ranked player. He can absolutely get the win and I would not be surprised at all if he did, but in order for that to happen, he will need to play aggressive, while Schwartzman is a great grinder, Roberto Bautista Agut is taller, stronger, and can grind more, so Schwartzman will have to do what he did with Paire today and attempt to attack Agut with penetrating groundstrokes, creating angles and punching shots down the line. His service will be taken advantage of, so he will also need to play aggressively on any second serves he gets some good looks at.
Roberto Bautista Agut got a nice win over Tommy Paul, with some great numbers on serve. He will need to maintain those numbers against Diego Schwartzman, as Diego is one of the best returners on tour. It’ll be tough to do that, especially if he plays aggressively, however, he should also have a good shot to outplay Diego in many areas, considering in my eyes he is the favorite on paper to win the match. If he keeps the unforced errors low and serves well, I think he may probably win the match. However, that’s easier said than done, their playstyles are rather similar, with Diego having a few more aggressive aspects to his game, but typically when two players have a similar style, it’s just the one who has more consistent results with that style who ends up coming out on top, and that would indeed be Roberto, who has a good look at moving on to the quarterfinals at the 2021 Toronto Open.
Roberto Bautista Agut and Diego Schwartzman have met two times before, with the head to head being tied at 1-1. Their two meetings were in 2019, with Diego winning the first one on the clay, and Roberto winning the second one right here in Toronto. This may give us the impression that Bautista Agut should definitely win, however, Schwartzman is playing better than he was in 2019, and Bautista Agut is not necessarily playing as well as he was in 2019 in my opinion. Still, with two players like this, the match could go either way depending on the day. It will mostly depend on how Roberto serves and if Diego is able to be aggressive in the right moments. Roberto Bautista Agut is as good a returner as Diego, and Diego is not at his best anymore, so I see the Spaniard hanging in there with the Argentine and getting some good returns on Diego’s poor service games to get himself in the Quarter-Finals of the 2021 Toronto Open.
