TennisSection previews the 2021 Toronto Open as Fabio Fognini meets Jan-Lennard Struff in the First Round on Monday August 9th, 2021.
A very interesting First Round match is upon us as Fabio Fognini faces Jan-Lennard Struff at the Toronto Open. Both men have extensive experience on the ATP Tour and are very evenly matched. Their games match up very well and they are close together in the rankings, potentially making for a very entertaining match. Who will get the win and advance to the Second Round at the Toronto Open?
Fabio Fognini is unseeded here at the 2021 Toronto Open and is currently ranked #32 on the ATP Tour. The veteran Italian is a former top 10 player who has spent a lot of his career at the top of the ATP rankings. After struggling with injuries and loss of form over the past few years, the talented player finds himself ranked outside the top 30 for the first time in quite a while. He has been having a modest season by his standards and will be desperate for a strong showing here to kickstart his hard court campaign leading up to the US Open. The Italian has every shot in the book and is one of the best players in the world on a good day, but struggles mightily with his focus and is very prone to meltdowns. If he can keep it together here he is the favorite, but that is a big “if”.
Jan-Lennard Struff is ranked #46 in the ATP world rankings and like his opponent Fabio Fognini is also unseeded here at the 2021 Toronto Open. The German is a very similar player to his opponent, in that he runs very “hot and cold”. On a good day he can challenge the very best players in the world, but on a bad day he can look very out of sorts. He enters this tournament in very poor form having lost his last three matches in a row, and like Fognini will be desperate to get off to a good start here and break the streak. The German enters this match as the slight underdog but is certainly capable of getting the win here if he plays well at the 2021 Toronto Open.
This will be the third match between the two players on the ATP Tour, and their head to head is tied at 1-1. Both of their previous matches have been on clay and over three years ago so there is not much information to be gained from them. This is a very difficult match to predict as it is between two of the most unpredictable and inconsistent players in the top 50, who are both capable of some very good or some very bad tennis at any given moment. With all that being said, I am going with Fognini here. He is the more experienced of the two and has been in slightly better form or late. Not to mention he usually saves his best tennis for the bigger events. I think that it will be a very close match, likely three sets but expect Fabio Fognini to get the win here over Jan-Lennard Struff, advancing to the Second Round here at the 2021 Toronto Open.
