TennisSection previews the 2021 Austria Open as Casper Ruud (1) meets Pedro Martinez in the Final on Saturday July 31st, 2021.
Casper Ruud is seeking to win a third consecutive title here at the 2021 Austrian Open as he faces Pedro Martinez in the Final. The Norwegian star won back to back titles in Gstaad and Bastad, and is the big favorite to complete his hat trick in Kitzbuhel. Pedro Martinez has also been playing some great tennis, can he take advantage of Ruud’s fatigue and cause the stunning upset?
Casper Ruud is the number one seed here at the 2021 Austrian Open and is currently ranked #14 on the ATP Tour. The Norwegian is the hottest player in world tennis at the moment, and is seeking his third title in a row. Such is his good form that he will break into the top 10 for the first time and be ranked #8 if he wins the title tomorrow as expected. After struggling against Mikael Ymer before winning in three sets he was back to his dominant best, defeating Arthur Rinderknech in straight sets to reach the Final. He enters this match against Pedro Martinez as the heavy favorite, and is likely to be able to overpower his opponent from the baseline with his heavy groundstrokes. One area of concern is the fact that he is a bit fatigued, and we need to keep an eye on that.
Pedro Martinez is unseeded here at the 2021 Austria Open and is currently ranked #97 in the ATP world rankings. The Spaniard has been having a fantastic week, reaching the first ATP Final of his career. After upsetting Roberto Bautista Agut in the Round of 16 for the biggest win of his career he overcame Daniel Altmaier in a tough three setter to reach his first ever Final. The Spaniard played some fantastic tactical tennis, using his consistency to grind out the win from the baseline. He will have to be more aggressive here against Casper Ruud, as the Norwegian is more powerful than he is and will try to dictate play from the baseline. He enters as the underdog here but will be full of confidence, plus knows that his opponent is likely feeling the effects of a full three weeks of tennis.
This will be the first meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour, and will have only one possible outcome which is a straight set win for Casper Ruud. While he must be very fatigued from his exploits over the last three weeks, he is still an elite player who will soon be a member of the ATP top 10. He should dominate this match from the baseline, with Pedro Martinez unable to keep up with his firepower. It could be a bit closer than expected, but there is no way Ruud loses here as he claims his third title on the trot here at the 2021 Austrian Open, breaking into the top 10.
