TennisSection previews the Tokyo 2020 Olympics as Novak Djokovic (1) takes on Jan-Lennard Struff in the Round of 32 on Monday, July 26th, 2021.
Will Jan-Lennard Struff get the biggest win of his career as he aims to prevent Novak Djokovic from continuing his Golden Slam quest here at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics? Will Novak Djokovic cruise through another match as he seems ready and locked in here in Tokyo? Both players are experienced and can hurt each other, but only one will make their way to the Round of 16 of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Who will it be?
Jan-Lennard Struff came through a straight sets win over the always tough Brazilian, Thiago Monteiro, winning 6-3/6-4. Jan-Lennard Struff is very solid on hard courts as he is able to get his serve firing faster through the court and his forehand as well. Struff will know that he can definitely improve some aspects of his game, such as his backhand under pressure, but he needs to do that very fast as he now has to play Novak Djokovic in the Round of 32. Can the big swinging German cause what would be the huge upset here at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics?
Novak Djokovic cruised through his first match, beating Hugo Dellien in straight sets 6-2/6-2. The match was great for Djokovic as he was finding his rhythm here in Tokyo and if this is just the base of his game, then I cannot imagine how much he will improve over this week. Novak is determined to keep his Golden Slam hopes alive and he will definitely leave it all out on the line in Tokyo to ensure that does happen. However, he needs to ensure he is ready to handle Jan-Lennard Struff’s power in the Round of 32.
Novak Djokovic and Jan-Lennard Struff have met 5 times before, with Novak Djokovic leading the head to head 5-0. Novak has always won in straight sets, except for one match where Struff got 1 set under his belt whilst he was 2-0 sets down. Novak has improved even more since their last meeting in 2020, shockingly, and he will know that he cannot afford to waste time on court to ensure he saves energy for tougher opponents. Struff will not be able to handle the constant pressure to his backhand and Novak will run away with this match to make his way to the Round of 16 of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
