TennisSection previews the 2021 Gstaad Open as Casper Ruud (3) takes on Dennis Novak in the Second Round on Thursday, July 22nd, 2021.
Will Dennis Novak get one of the biggest wins of his career under his belt as he aims to gain some momentum in a 2021 season where he has underperformed? Will Casper Ruud continue to perform at a high level coming off of his title win at the Nordea Open last week? This will be a very entertaining match between two power hitters, but only one will make the Quarter-Finals of the 2021 Gstaad Open. Who will it be?
Dennis Novak cruised through his First Round match here in Gstaad, beating the lucky loser, Kacper Zuk in straight sets 6-4/6-4. Dennis Novak, on his day, is a very solid player and he has a lot of power behind his shots. However, this year he has not really performed to the best of his ability, losing early in most small ATP 250 tournaments he participated in and not making a bigger name for himself. Dennis will know that he needs to be at his best now in the Second Round of the 2021 Gstaad Open as he meets one of the most in form clay court players in Casper Ruud. Can Novak get it done and use the fact that he has nothing to lose to fuel the upset?
Casper Ruud had a great week last week at the Nordea Open, cruising through his entire side of the draw in straight sets to win the title and get himself into a strong position coming into the 2021 Gstaad Open. On clay, Casper Ruud is one of the toughest opponents to meet as he has heavy spin on his shots and his power is incredible. Casper has trained a lot with Nadal on clay and this has definitely helped his game, and I am sure he will have an even better future than what is expected of him. Ruud will not want to let his guard down after winning a title last week and he will definitely come out strongly against Dennis Novak here.
Casper Ruud and Dennis Novak have met 1 time before, with Casper Ruud leading the head to head 1-0. They met on clay in 2018 where Ruud won in straight sets 6-4/6-2. I expect a similar match here at the 2021 Gstaad Open. Casper Ruud is in incredible form, whilst Novak has been struggling all year, and his performance against Zuk in the First Round was not anything to write home about. Casper Ruud will not want to waste any time on court as he aims to make it back to back titles in 2 weeks, so he will come out here and dominate from the start to make his way to the Quarter-Finals of the 2021 Gstaad Open.
