Dominik Koepfer had to fight through an extremely tight First Round match here at the 2021 Hamburg Open, beating his fellow German, Maximillian Marterer, in 3 sets 7-6/2-6/7-6. The match was tight from start to finish and it was so hard to predict who would come out on top at the start of the 3rd set. However, the experience that Dominik Koepfer has, and the somewhat successful results against players like Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer, when he won sets against them on clay in the past, clearly helped him maintain his composure during the tiebreaks. Now, Dominik will meet one of the best clay courters this year in Stefanos Tsitsipas. Can he cause the huge upset?
Stefanos Tsitsipas plays his 1st match back on clay since his loss at the French Open Final last month. Tsitsipas was great on clay this year, and it was sad that it ended the way it did with him losing the Final from 2-0 sets up. When it came to the grass court season, Tsitsipas did not have a good time, losing his first match at Wimbledon in straight sets against Frances Tiafoe. Now that he is back on clay, especially here at the 2021 Hamburg Open, Stefanos Tsitsipas will want to get started off strongly and not waste any time. Tsitsipas lost in the Final here last year to Andrey Rublev, and with Rublev not playing this year, I am sure the Greek will want to begin his campaign against Dominik Koepfer off strongly to gain momentum in his title campaign.
Stefanos Tsitsipas and Dominik Koepfer have never met before, with this being their first meeting on the ATP Tour. Dominik Koepfer will definitely get some support from the crowd as he is a German player. However, the fact that he had to fight so hard just to beat Maximillian Marterer does not give me any confidence in his ability to succeed against Stefanos Tsitsipas. Stefanos will want to get a strong win under his belt to build some momentum after a tough last month. I don’t expect Tsitsipas to waste any time in his campaign here, and he will quickly make his way to the 2021 Hamburg Open Quarter-Finals.
