TennisSection previews the 2021 Wimbledon Championships as Madison Keys takes on Viktorija Golubic in the Round of 16 on Monday, July 5th 2021.
Will Viktorija somehow continue her miraculous run? Will Keys secure her journey back to top form and advance to the quarter-finals? This match will be an interesting one to see whether Keys will display the level she needs to be a title contender. Who will move on to the quarterfinals at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships?
Viktorija Golubic took out the 29th seed in the first round in 3 sets, and since then has dominated her matches displaying an extremely high level on serve. To pull this win off would be a miracle for her, getting her best ever performance at a major. She is certainly no favorite to win this match, especially after the level Keys has displayed throughout her tournament. She’ll need to maintain her high first serve percentage, and try to push Keys to tiebreakers or wait if Keys plays a bad service game. I think her main focus should be on making sure she won’t get broken, just staying super solid there and going all out on the smallest opportunity. Essentially, she’ll need to play lights out tennis, which is no surprise given her ranking, results as of late, and opponent. I don’t think she has much of a chance, but this upset certainly wouldn’t be the strangest thing that happened in this tournament.
Madison Keys is coming into this match with loads of confidence that she can get through to the quarterfinals. After a great win over Elise Mertens in straight sets, now she has a lower ranked opponent in Golubic to be able to make it deep into slams with the level we know she has in her. Madison has struggled badly in the last 17 months, hardly winning matches during that time period. However, in this tournament she stepped up and managed to play some great tennis, taking out great players and rolling through most of her matches. She is the heavy favorite going into this one, and I suspect her average level would be enough to come through relatively easily. Let’s see if she’ll be able to display the level needed to be a title contender.
Viktorija Golubic and Madison Keys have met two times before, with the head to head being tied at 1-1. With one exhibition meeting in 2019, the other two meetings were in 2016 and 2017, each player getting one win. These two matches don’t really give us any indicators about the match aside from the fact that both of them should be familiar with each other. There should be no major surprises about their match come Monday, and I generally expect Madison to sweep Viktorija throughout their counter to make the Quarter-finals of the 2021 Wimbledon Championships.
