Can Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova make another strong showing to move on? Can Kristyna Pliskova pull the upset? This match will be an interesting one to see whether Pavlyuchenkova can maintain a high level on the grass and be a threat at this year’s Wimbledon. Who will move on to the Round of 32 at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships?
Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova got through to the Round of 64 with an easy win over Ana Bogdan, 6-2 6-2. Her service numbers looked great, and she did not even offer a single break point. I do expect for Anastasia to keep these service numbers up, and assuming she does, she’s the very clear favorite over Pliskova. In the Eastbourne Open just one week prior, she suffered a brutal loss to eventual champion Jelena Ostapenko in the first round, but it seems since then she’s gotten some good practice in and has found her level on the grass. If she’s just able to stay that solid on serve, I really do back her to do great at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships.
Kristyna Pliskova got through in three sets after dropping the first one. Offering 6 break points to her opponent and only serving at 54%, it will be a very tough ask of Kristyna to even push her opponent with numbers like that. She will need to make sure that she is perfect on serve because if she gives an inch to Pavlyuchenkova, that opportunity will most likely be jumped on. She will need to play some out of the box tennis from her usual style, as the only way to beat someone who’s a clear favorite is to attempt to blow them off the court. She’ll need to try to throw her opponent off of her pace with slices, short angles, variation on the serve, and some flat hitting, aggressive play. Even if she tries to do this, I don’t see her being able to push Anastasia much due to those service numbers, it’s hard to make up that match ground in that short of a period of time, so unless she doesn’t do that, she has very slim chances come Thursday.
Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Kristyna Pliskova have played one time before, with Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova leading the series 1-0. Their only meeting came this year at the Doha Open, this, even more, solidifies the confidence that Pavlyuchenkova should have to go into this match, defeating Pliskova 6-3 6-2 on a fast court just a few months earlier. I think an average level from her will get her through the match in straight sets because with the numbers she had in her first round match, she’s the very clear favorite to move on to the Round of 32 at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships.
