Will Jiri Vesely be able to make yet another solid run at Wimbledon? Will Marton Fucsovics back up his big win to move to the third round? This contest promises to be an interesting one, as we will see whether Fucsovics can carry the momentum he got to prolong his stay in the tournament, or if Vesely is able to cause the upset and get another good run himself.
Jiri Vesely is a great player on the grass, making several fourth rounds, losing to great players like Nadal and Berdych. We know that he definitely has the potential to trouble Fucsovics tomorrow, while he isn’t the favorite on paper, depending on the situation I absolutely see him being able to move on to the Round of 32. In today’s match against Hanfmann, he put on an exceptional display on serve, reaching an 82% win off his first serve. He will need to maintain these numbers and apply as much pressure as he can on Fucsovics if he wants to come out on top on Wednesday.
Marton Fucsovics defeated Yannik Sinner in a slight upset in 4 sets today, converting 9/19 break points. Both players’ service numbers were lower than they would have liked, especially for two players with such good service capabilities. Marton also threw in 8 double faults today, with only 7 aces. He’ll really need to improve his numbers, the reason I still tag him as the favorite for this match is because of the quality of the opponent he defeated, as well as his ranking. It is also harder to have good numbers against someone like Sinner, who is in the top 10 players who break serve most often. I think if he’s able to recover well enough, he shouldn’t have a ton of trouble with Vesely.
Marton Fucsovics and Jiri Vesely have never played before, with this being their first career meeting. The level that Fucsovics can bring is easily top 20 level, however, he’s rather inconsistent, so I honestly would not be super surprised if he ends up losing to Vesely, I do see this match being able to go either way. However, I have faith that Fucsovics will be able to bring what he did today to the court when he has to face Jiri, and I do expect him to be able to come through as long as something out of the ordinary doesn’t occur, which is possible.
