Fifteenth seeded Maria Sakkari has been having a solid season so far this year, most notably reaching the Semi-Finals at the French Open where she was very unlucky to not have reached the Final. The Greek star has a reputation of being one of the hardest workers on tour, and will be hoping for a strong run here at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships. Can the unseeded American Shelby Rogers cause the massive upset and advance to the Third Round here?
Maria Sakkari is a new entrant in the world top 20, and is playing with a lot of confidence after her first major Semi-Final at the 2021 French Open. The Greek player is a very solid baseliner who moves very well, however grass is a completely different surface and she seems to still be trying to figure it out. It was very interesting that she chose not to enter any of the warm-up events, and you have to wonder if she will pay the price for that as did her countryman Stefanos Tsitsipas. She was dominant in her First Round win over Aranxta Rus, only dropping two games en route to a 6-1, 6-1 victory. She enters this match as the favorite here against Shelby Rogers and will be hoping for a similarly comprehensive win.
Shelby Rogers is ranked #46 on the WTA Tour, and is unseeded here at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships. The American escaped with a hard-fought three set win over veteran Sam Stosur, and will be relieved to be in the Second Round. While she is a solid player, she has never had much success on grass and is up against it here against the in-form Maria Sakkari. She is the underdog here but does have a bit more grass court experience than her younger opponent here and should not be counted out.
This will be the first meeting between the two players on the WTA Tour, and it is shaping up to be a very interesting one. This is a difficult one to predict due to both players not having much success on grass, but in this case I have to go with the in-form and higher ranked Maria Sakkari here. She has taken her game to a new level and still has some upside, whereas with Shelby Rogers we know what to expect from her at this stage in her career. It will likely go the distance but I expect the Greek to come out on top and advance to the Third Round of the 2021 Wimbledon Championships.
