Wimbledon Championships 2021: Iga Swiatek vs. Vera Zvonareva Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2021 Wimbledon Championships as Iga Swiatek (7) meets Vera Zvonareva in the Second Round on Wednesday June 30th, 2021.

Seventh seeded Iga Swiatek of Poland will face unseeded Russian Vera Zvonareva in an interesting Second Round clash here at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships. Swiatek is one of the best players in the world at the moment, but she is facing the very experienced Russian who is a former Finalist here. Who will get the win and advance to the Third Round?

Iga Swiatek is currently ranked #9 on the WTA Tour, and is the seventh seed this year at Wimbledon. The Polish star has established herself as one of the top players in the world, and all signs point to her continuing to improve and dominating the women’s tour. However, when it comes to grass, she really doesn’t have much experience on the surface and is still figuring out how to move effectively, as evidenced by her tough three set win in the First Round. Next up for Swiatek is the decorated Vera Zvonareva, a former Wimbledon Finalist and world number two. The Polish #1 had never won a match at Wimbledon before this year, and she will be in for a very tough test here at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships.

Vera Zvonareva is a former world number two, and has had a lot of success here at Wimbledon, reaching the Final in 2010. The Russian is now ranked #96, and has struggled over the past few years, interestingly not reaching the Third Round at Wimbledon since that run eleven years ago. She was impressive in her straight-sets win over Marie Bouzkova in the First Round, and will have some momentum heading into a tough match with Iga Swiatek. While her opponent is much higher ranked and has been better recently, question marks still remain about her ability on grass and this is expected to be a battle here.

This will be the first time the two players have faced each other on the WTA Tour, and it is certainly expected to be a very close battle. If this was on any other surface I would predict a comfortable win for young star Iga Swiatek, but since she is now learning the ropes on grass and her opponent Vera Zvonareva is highly experienced on the surface I think it will be very close. I do expect this to go the distance, but ultimately the younger and better player will prevail, and that is Iga Swiatek. She may start slowly, but will eventually figure it out and advance to the Third Round here at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships.
