Teenage British sensation Jack Draper will get a dream Grand Slam Debut here at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships as he will face world number one Novak Djokovic in the First Round. While it is a daunting task to face the Serbian Legend, you couldn’t ask for a better place to begin your career than on Centre Court at the All-England Club. Can the talented teen give his home crowd something to cheer about with one of the biggest upsets in tennis history? Or will Novak Djokovi march on in his quest for a 20th Grand Slam title?
Novak Djokovic is ranked #1 in the ATP world rankings, and is the top seed here at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships. The Serbian star is one of the greatest players in tennis history, and will be seeking to equal the Grand Slam title record which is currently shared by Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal with a win here. He is also still in contention to win a historic Golden Slam (winning all four Grand Slams plus the Olympics in the same year), something that has never been done before. Djokovic prepared for this event by playing doubles in Mallorca, reaching the Final before his partner had to withdraw due to injury. With the withdrawal of Rafael Nadal and Dominic Thiem, he is the heavy favorite to win the title here at Wimbledon and is not expected to encounter many issues in his opening round match against Jack Draper.
Jack Draper has already been crowned as the next big British hope in tennis, and has impressed lately. The 2018 Junior Wimbledon Runner-up, he clearly has an affection for this surface as he produced a stunning run to the Queen’s Quarter-Finals last week, upsetting Jannik Sinner and Alexander Bublik in the process. Defeating two top-40 players is no easy feat on any surface, and it seems like the sky is the limit for the youngster. The Brit has a big lefty serve and seems mature beyond his years. His confidence will be sky-high after that fantastic run, and he will be ecstatic at the chance to compete on Centre Court, which is an opportunity that many players never get. While he is not expected to challenge Novak Djokovic in this match, the experience will be massive and I think that we will be hearing more about him in the future.
This will be the first meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour, and while I am a big believer in Jack Draper’s talent, there is no way that he gets anything out of this match. Novak Djokovic is one of the best players in tennis history and the holder of five Wimbledon titles, and he very rarely (if ever) loses to inexperienced players. The British youngster will be relishing the moment of competing on the most famous court in the world and will surely be suffering from nerves. I expect Novak Djokovic to cruise to victory here, advancing to the Second Round of the 2021 Wimbledon Championships.
