Fourth seeded Pablo Carreno Busta of Spain will face unseeded Australian Jordan Thompson for a spot in the Semi-Finals here at the 2021 Mallorca Open. Can the Aussie continue his impressive run with an upset here? Or can PCB get the win, advancing to his first career grass court Semi?
Pablo Carreno Busta is ranked #13 in the ATP world rankings and is the fourth seed here at home at the 2021 Mallorca Open. The Spaniard has a reputation of being one of the most solid and consistent performers on the ATP Tour, but his grass court performances have been woeful to say the least. In his entire career he has only won two matches on the surface, and is yet to win a match at Wimbledon in five attempts. Despite his poor record he should still be considered the favorite here over Jordan Thompson, and was impressive in his Round of 16 win over Jiri Vesely. PCB displayed tremendous patience when returning the tall Czech’s serve, and once he gets going in the rally his aggressive groundstrokes will be dangerous. His Quarter-Final opponent doesn’t have a huge serve so expect PCB to do well here despite the surface.
Jordan Thompson is unseeded here at the 2021 Mallorca Open, and is currently ranked #76 on the ATP Tour. The Aussie has been in poor form so far this season other than a Quarter-Final appearance in a warm up event for the Australian Open. Thompson defeated Pablo Andujar in three sets in the First Round before comfortably dispatching Lukas Klein in the Round of 16, and will be high on confidence here in the Quarter-Finals. He has a losing record on grass including four consecutive First Round exits at Wimbledon, but his only career ATP Final is on this surface, proving that he has some ability. While his opponent Pablo Carreno Busta is the favorite here, he also has a poor grass record so the Aussie will be backing himself to cause the upset here in Mallorca.
This will be the second meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour, with Pablo Carreno Busta leading the head to head series 1-0. The Spaniard won their only meeting this year in Barcelona, winning in straight sets on clay. This is an interesting matchup here at the 2021 Mallorca Open, with both players being hard court players and not quite comfortable on the grass. They have seemingly found some form here in Mallorca and have been playing well, but I have to go with Carreno Busta to get the win here. He is a much better player than Jordan Thompson overall, and even on his least preferred surface I don’t think that the Aussie has the firepower to totally throw him off. It won’t be easy, but I expect the Spaniard to get the win here, advancing to the first grass court Semi-Final of his career.
