TennisSection previews the 2021 Mallorca Open as Adrian Mannarino meets Feliciano Lopez in the Quarter-Finals on Thursday June 24th, 2021.
A surprising matchup awaits us in the Quarter-Finals of the 2021 Mallorca Open, as unseeded pair Adrian Mannarino and Feliciano Lopez square off for a place in the Semis. Both men have played some solid tennis to reach this stage, and the Frenchman has had a bit of luck as well. Who will keep their momentum going and book their spot in the next round here in Mallorca?
Adrian Mannarino is ranked #42 on the ATP Tour, and is unseeded here at the 2021 Mallorca Open. The Frenchman has been having an inconsistent season, but is a very solid player and a dangerous opponent on all surfaces. He has been in decent form on the grass so far, reaching the Round of 16 at Queen’s, and defeating the in-form Jan-Lennard Struff in the First Round here in Mallorca. Mannarino then received a stroke of luck, when second seeded Dominic Thiem retired from their match due to injury after leading 5-2. He will be looking to make the most of this opportunity, and reach the Semi-Final of a grass court event for the first time. While he is ranked higher than his opponent Feliciano Lopez, this match should be fairly even and will be a difficult one for the Frenchman.
Feliciano Lopez is unseeded here at the 2021 Mallorca Open, and is currently ranked #64 on the ATP Tour. The Spanish veteran has had a long and successful career that is sadly soon coming to a close. While he does not play a full schedule anymore, he is still capable of some solid tennis, and his serve makes him especially dangerous on grass courts where he has had much success. Lopez has won multiple grass court titles on the ATP Tour, and certainly is capable of winning this event here at home as no one in the draw has his experience on the surface. He is coming off a three set win over Karen Khachanov, a match where he dug deep to come away with victory. If fatigue is not a factor for him here he should probably be considered the slight favorite here over Adrian Mannarino, but this match is shaping up to be a very close battle here in Mallorca.
This will be the fourth meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour, with Feliciano Lopez leading the head to head series 2-1. Very surprisingly, Adrian Mannarino’s only win was four years ago on the grass at Wimbledon. This is a very difficult match to call between the two lefties and really can go either way. All things considered, I am going to back the veteran Lopez to get the win here. He is approaching the end of his career but is still an extremely good grass court player, and his serve is almost unplayable on this surface. I expect three sets in the match and possibly a tiebreaker or two, but the Spaniard should come away with a tight win here at the 2021 Mallorca Open, advancing to his first Semi-Final of the year.
