TennisSection previews the 2021 Mallorca Open as Pablo Carreno Busta (4) meets Jiri Vesely in the Quarter-Finals on Wednesday June 23rd, 2021.
Fourth seeded Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta will begin his grass court campaign at the 2021 Mallorca Open. He has traditionally struggled on this surface throughout his career and will be hoping to break that trend this year. In his way is the Czech veteran Jiri Vesely, who tends to enjoy playing on the quicker surface. Can he cause the upset here in Mallorca?
Pablo Carreno Busta is ranked #13 in the ATP world rankings and is the fourth seed here at home at the 2021 Mallorca Open. The Spaniard has a reputation of being one of the most solid and consistent performers on the ATP Tour, but his grass court performances have been woeful to say the least. In his entire career he has only won two matches on the surface, and is yet to win a match at Wimbledon in five attempts. While his game is not really built for the surface, it is very surprising that his record is that poor and he certainly is better on grass than his record suggests. His biggest issue is the movement on the surface, something that he is not quite comfortable with yet. Despite his poor record he should still be considered the favorite here against Jiri Vesely, but he is in for a battle.
Jiri Vesely is unseeded here at the 2021 Mallorca Open, and is ranked #71 on the ATP Tour. The tall lefty has a huge serve, and will be extremely dangerous on this surface if that is working. A very solid grass court player who has reached the Fourth Round at Wimbledon twice in his career, he has had a decent season so far this year, and will be hoping to improve here on grass. He lost in the First Round in Stuttgart but started strongly here in Mallorca with a very tough win over Salvatore Caruso, setting up this clash with the fourth seed. Pablo Carreno Busta is the betting favorite but Vesely’s grass court record is much stronger than his opponent’s, and the match is likely to be a lot closer than many think.
This will be the second meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour, with Pablo Carreno Busta leading the head to head series 1-0. On any other surface I would predict this to be a straightforward win for the Spaniard, but given his dismal grass-court record it is hard to do so. His opponent Jiri Vesely has a huge serve and has performed well on the surface throughout his career, so I am backing him to cause the upset here at the 2021 Mallorca Open. PCB has the quality to keep it interesting, but I expect him to struggle to break serve here and the Czech’s power is likely going to be a bit much on this surface. I wouldn’t be hugely surprised if PCB gets the win as he is one of the best players in the world, but on grass give me Jiri Vesely to win all day long.
