TennisSection previews the 2021 Eastbourne Open as Lorenzo Sonego (3) meets John Millman in the Round of 16 on Wednesday, June 23rd 2021.
Will John Millman be able to put on another solid performance as he looks to get himself ready for Wimbledon next week? Will Lorenzo Sonego continue building on the strong momemtum he has gained this year on the ATP Tour as he is making a name for himself? Both players can win this match if they are on top of their game, but only one will make their way to the Quarter-finals of the 2021 Eastbourne Open. Who will it be?
John Millman has gone 2-1 in his first 3 grass court matches, having played against some strong opponents like Reilly Opelka and Alex de Minaur. John Millman beat the local wildcard Jay Clarke in the Round of 32, beating him in straight sets 6-3/6-2. John Millman is has not been at his best this year, going 10-13 in all of his matches. However, John Millman is a very experienced player who can ruffle anyones feathers when he is at his best. At 32 years old, Millman cannot afford to play every tournament due to his body, but he will be trying to get some quality matches under his belt before Wimbledon to prepare himself. However, he meets the very in form Lorenzo Sonego who has had a strong 2021.
Lorenzo Sonego did not have the start to the grass court season which he would have hoped for, losing in the opening round of the Queen’s Open last week to the very experienced but old and not good Viktor Troicki in straight sets 4-6/4-6. Lorenzo Sonego is much better than the performance he put on in that match and I am sure he will have been working a lot behind closed doors to ensure he does not lose to such a low ranked opponent again. Lorenzo Sonego has power, speed, accuracy, and passion, and if he can adapt his game strongly to grass, he will have a strong chance against John Millman here at the 2021 Eastbourne Open.
Lorenzo Sonego and John Millman have never met before, with this being their first meeting on the ATP Tour. Both players will be determined to go far here at the Viking International as they will want to gain confidence and momentum before Wimbledon starts next week. However, going off of who I believe will play better under the pressure and who has more momentum this year, I have to go with Lorenzo Sonego. Although he has only played 1 match on grass and lost this year, I am sure he has worked hard to get better. John Millman will put up a fight, but Sonego will still win with his speed and accuracy of shots to make his way to the Quarter-finals of the 2021 Eastbourne Open.
