Will Novak Djokovic continue to cruise through opponents as he looks to set up a potential Quarter-final encounter against either Berrettini or one of his greatest rivals, Roger Federer? This will be a battle of youth and experience, who will make their way to the Quarter-finals of the 2021 French Open?
Lorenzo Musetti came through an extremely tight match against the former 2018 Roland Garros Semi-finalist, Marco Cecchinato, in 5-sets 3-6/6-4/6-3/3-6/6-3. The battle of the Italians lives up to expectations and delivered even more! However, one wonders how much of a toll this might have taken on Lorenzo Musetti. Playing Grand Slam tennis is not an easy feat, playing 2 weeks in a row, best of 5 set matches, and having to ensure you are ready to fight in every match you play. Lorenzo Musetti has been great all tournament, beating some bigger and more experienced players, however, he now meets the World No.1, Novak Djokovic, in the Round of 16 at Roland Garros, and I wonder how much he can actually do to keep this run alive.
Novak Djokovic cruised through another match here at Roland Garros, beating Ricardas Berankis in the Round of 32 in straight sets 6-1/6-4/6-1. The match was very straight forward for Novak as all he really had to do was aim to make the rallies longer as Ricardas aims to finish points off within 3-4 shots, therefore making him play 1 more ball is always going to result in an error on Berankis’ side. Novak Djokovic will be very happy with his performances so far at the 2021 French Open, but he will also know that we are now entering the business end of the tournament, and he will want to raise his level even more to show that he is ready to fight against the best players here in Paris. He will want to teach the young ones a lesson too, such as Lorenzo Musetti.
Novak Djokovic and Lorenzo Musetti have never met before, with this being their first meeting. Although Lorenzo Musetti has been playing well all week, and he will be a star of the future, he will stand no chance against such an experienced, determined, and dominant player such as Novak Djokovic. The Big 3 do not play around when it comes to the later stages of Grand Slams, not wanting to waste time on court and save energy for more dangerous opponents. Therefore, I see Novak getting this win under his belt very quickly to keep his 2021 French Open title hopes alive and get ready for a big Quarter-final.
