A highly anticipated Semi-Final is upon us at the 2021 Lyon Open as young stars Stefanos Tsitsipas and Lorenzo Musetti do battle. Second seeded Tsitsipas has been the standout player so far this season, and will continue on his quest for a second title of the year. Lorenzo Musetti is a rising star of the men’s game, and has upset many top ranked players in his short career. Can he take it one step further here in Lyon, getting the shocking upset and advancing to his first ATP Final?
Stefanos Tsitsipas is seeded second here at the 2021 Lyon Open, and is currently ranked #5 in the ATP world rankings. The Greek star has firmly established himself as one of the top players in the world so far this season, winning his first Masters title in Monte-Carlo a few weeks ago. Tsitsipas has been incredibly consistent so far this season, leading the tour in match wins and should be considered the favorite to win the title here in Lyon. He has sailed through the draw here with complete ease, defeating Tommy Paul and Yoshihito Nishioka in straight sets to reach this stage. The Greek star enters this match against Lorenzo Musetti as the overwhelming favorite, but should not underestimate his giant-killing Italian opponent who is a very dangerous player on this surface.
Lorenzo Musetti is ranked #88 in the ATP world rankings, and is yet another young Italian prodigy that is making a mark on the world scene. He had his breakthrough last year in Rome, defeating Stan Wawrinka and Kei Nishikori en route to the Round of 16. The young Italian has been having yet another strong season so far, making it to the Semi-Finals in Acapulco. One thing missing from his performances has been consistency, and as he continues to mature as a player you can expect that to improve as well. The youngster has a huge game and is very comfortably on the clay courts, making him an extremely difficult opponent. After impressive wins over Felix Auger-Aliassime and Sebastian Korda he comfortably dispatched Aljaz Bedene to book his spot in the Semi-Finals here at the 2021 Lyon Open, reaching this stage for the second time in his career.
This will be the second time that the two players have faced each other on the ATP Tour, with Stefanos Tsitsipas leading the head to head series 1-0. This played each other this year in the Acapulco Semis, with the Greek star winning comfortably, 6-1, 6-3. I expect this match to have a similar outcome, with Tsitsipas winning comfortably and advancing to yet another Final. Lorenzo Musetti is a fantastic player, and certainly will be a future star but the Greek is a true superstar and has been remarkable this season. Expect him to weather the Musetti storm comfortably, advancing to the Final here at the 2021 Lyon Open.
