TennisSection previews the 2021 Rome Open as Novak Djokovic (1) meets Stefanos Tsitsipas (5) in the Quarter-Finals on Friday May 14th, 2021.
A blockbuster is upon us here at the 2021 Rome Open as world number one Novak Djokovic of Serbia will face fifth seeded Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas. Djokovic is the defending champion here, but has been struggling lately. Meanwhile Tsitsipas has been having a career year, and is one of the hottest players on tour at the moment. If there was ever a time for the upset to happen, it would be now. Who will win and advance to the Semi-Finals?
Novak Djokovic is the defending champion here in Rome and is ranked #1 in the world. A five time winner of this event, he has largely failed to produce his usual dominant tennis this year and will be out to make amends here at the 2021 Rome Open. While he faltered a bit in his win over Taylor Fritz, the Serbian legend was back to his dominant best in his 6-2, 6-1 demolition of Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. Djokovic served extremely well during this match, winning over 70% of his first serve points. When he serves as well as he did, he is almost unstoppable as his main strength lies in his return game and ability to break. There were some concerns about his form but he has seemingly put those to rest, and appears ready to battle one of the most in-form players in the world in Stefanos Tsitsipas.
Stefanos Tsitsipas is currently ranked a career-high #5 in the ATP world rankings, and has been having a career year thus far in 2021. The Greek star has been ultra-consistent here, with a string of deep runs at most tournaments he has played. Tsitsipas finally had his breakthrough ATP-1000 win at the Monte-Carlo Masters, stunning Rafael Nadal en route to the title. This has seemingly given him the belief that he can win these major tournaments, and in this scorching form he is a major contender for the title here at the 2021 Rome Open. The Greek star destroyed Marin Cilic in the Second Round before overcome Matteo Berrettini in two tight sets in the Round of 16. While Novak Djokovic is the number one player in the world, it appears as though this match is dead even here at the 2021 Rome Open.
This will be the seventh match between the two players, with Djokovic leading the head to head series 4-2. Both men have been in outstanding form so far here at the 2021 Rome Open, and this match is sure to be a blockbuster. Normally the world number one would be a straightforward pick, but his recent dip in form over the past weeks and Tsitsipas’ incredible run have made it very tough to call. It is incredibly close to go against Stefanos Tsitsipas here given his career-best year but I am backing Novak Djokovic to win. The Serbian star usually seems to find a way to pull through despite not being at his best, and I think that he will grind out an extremely close win. It is very likely that he will require three sets, so that is a good shout but I expect Novak Djokovic to get the win and advance to the Semi-Finals here at the 2021 Rome Open.
