TennisSection previews the 2021 Madrid Open as Jannik Sinner (14) meets Guido Pella in the First Round on Tuesday, May 4th, 2021.
Will Guido Pella show us that he should still be respected on the ATP Tour, especially on clay courts, even though we haven’t seen his best tennis in a while? Will Jannik Sinner continue to shine on the ATP Tour as he aims to rise up the rankings and keep his name in the mix of Top 8 players of the year to make his way to the ATP Finals? Both players will put on a show here in this First Round match, but only one will make it to the Second Round. Who will it be?
Guido Pella will be looking to have a better week here at the 2021 Madrid Open as he had to retire last week in the Second Round of the Bavarian International Challenger Tour tournament due to injury. Guido Pella will have known then and there that he should have retired to ensure he had enough time to recover for the tournament here in Madrid. However, one thing which he would have not hoped for, is meeting Jannik Sinner in the First Round. In his day, Guido Pella can definitely hurt some big named players, as he has done against the likes of Marin Cilic, but we have not seen this in years. Will Guido Pella come out at his best?
Jannik Sinner has been playing some great tennis recently, reaching the Semi-finals of the 2021 Barcelona Open a couple weeks ago. However, Jannik Sinner did not show up quite ready for the semis, and lost in straight sets. This should not take away from his amazing week none the less as he was able to beat the likes of Roberto Bautista Agut and Andrey Rublev along the way. Jannik Sinner loves playing on all surfaces, but on clay he has been the most successful in terms of big tournament results. Jannik Sinner will know that he needs to be at his best now that he’s meeting a clay lover in Guido Pella, but I am sure he has the confidence.
Jannik Sinner and Guido Pella have never met before, with this being their first meeting on the ATP Tour. Although Guido Pella has more experience on the ATP Tour, he is nowhere near the level, not even at his peak, compared to Jannik Sinner. Jannik Sinner is a future world No.1, and he is only going to get better this year. I don’t even think this is going to be a tight match as the Italian will want to continue showing everyone that he is one to watch for the future, and he will win in straight sets to make his way to the Second Round of the 2021 Madrid Open.
