A blockbuster Final is upon us at the 2021 Serbia Open as two of the top seeds face against eachother here in Matteo Berrettini and Aslan Karatsev. The two players have dominated so far here in Belgrade and this is not a match that tennis fans will want to miss. Can Aslan Karatsev back up his strong win against Novak Djokovic to lift his second title of the year in his breakthrough season? Or can the Italian get his career back on track and claim his first title of the year?
Matteo Berrettini was having a miserable year so far in 2021, suffering from a big loss of form, and injuries. However, he has seemingly turned his season around with some fantastic performances this week at the 2021 Serbia Open. He has been fully focused throughout, and has dominated opponents with his big serve and huge forehand. Better known for his hard court prowess, he is still a very capable clay court player, and has won an ATP title on the surface. The Italian star was dominant in his Semi-Final win over Taro Daniel, not allowing the Japanese player to get in any sort of rhythm whatsoever with some ultra-aggressive play and won the match in 3 sets 6-1/(5)6-7/6-0. While he has been excellent here so far, he enters the Final against Aslan Karatsev who has just knocked out the heavy favourite, Novak Djokovic, and will have to play at his absolute best to claim his first ATP title of 2021.
Aslan Karatsev just got the biggest win of his career under his belt, beating the World No.1, top seed, and local hero, Novak Djokovic in what was the longest ATP Tour match of the year! Aslan Karatsev won in 3 sets 7-5/4-6/6-4 in 3 hours and 25 minutes, and silenced the all-Serbian pro-Djokovic crowd as he stormed his way through the match. It was clear that Novak Djokovic was not playing at 10/10, but he was perhaps at 70-80% of his usual level on clay, but that just was not enough to keep up with the man who is having his breakthrough season. Aslan will now want to back up this incredible victory by winning his second career title, and second of 2021, against Matteo Berrettini.
Matteo Berrettini and Aslan Karatsev have never met before, with this being their first meeting on the ATP Tour. While they have both been dominant throughout the 2021 Serbia Open, I see only one outcome possible here, and that is a straightforward win for Aslan Karatsev. Aslan Karatsev has seemed fully locked in as he continues to rise on the ATP Tour in 2021, and it is unlikely that he will lose here, especially with the confidence gained from beating Novak Djokovic. Matteo Berrettini is a very strong player, but I don’t see him having the consistency or ability to hang with Karatsev here, especially since he has not been at his best in recent times. The Italian has the firepower to make things interesting but will ultimately fall short here. Aslan Karasetv will win and become the 2021 Serbia Open champion, his second title in 2021.
