TennisSection previews the 2021 Miami Open as Daniil Medvedev (1) meets Yen-hsun Lu in the Second Round on Friday March 26th, 2021.
New world number two Daniil Medvedev begins his 2021 Miami Open campaign with a Second Round encounter against Yen-Hsun Lu of Taiwan. This appears to be a relatively easy match on paper and the big Russian will be looking to get off to a strong start here. Will he continue his winning streak after winning the Marseille Open with a dominant performance here? Or can Lu make this interesting? Any time Medvedev steps onto the court it is sure to be very exciting and we don’t expect this to be any different.
Daniil Medvedev is currently ranked #2 in the world and is the number one seed here at the 2021 Miami Open after the withdrawal of Novak Djokovic. He has gotten off to a very strong start here in 2021, boasting a 14-2 record with a Finals appearance at the Australian Open and winning the title in Marseille. The Russian star has been mostly dominant this year but was stunningly beaten in Rotterdam by Dusan Lajovic, when he had a huge meltdown. He enters this match against Yen-Hsun Lu as the huge favorite but it remains to be seen how he copes with the pressure of being the favorite for the title here in Miami. With his fantastic blend of offense and defense he is expected to go far if not all the way here and will hugely confident of advancing to the Third Round here.
Yen-hsun Lu is currently ranked #1020 and enters the 2021 Miami Open due to his protected ranking. Once ranked as high as #37, he is a very experienced player who spends most of his time on the Challenger Tour, where he has won more tournaments than anyone in history. Now 37 years of age, he was not expected to get through his First Round match but he stunned local favorite Sam Querry in straight sets to set up this matchup with Daniil Medvedev. He returned well against Querry but knows that he will have to take his game a level further if he is to be competitive against Medvedev. This is just his third ATP main draw of the year, after the Great Ocean Road Open and Australian Open. He enters this match as the huge underdog, can he take inspiration from Dusan Lajovic and get the shocking win here?
Daniil Medveev and Yen-Hsun Lu have met once before, with the Russian star leading the head to head series 1-0. They played in Chennai in 2017, with Medvedev winning in straight sets. This match will only have one outcome and that is a comprehensive straight-sets win for the world number two. Lu has had a good career but it is winding to a close now, and he really only is here at this event due to his protected ranking and not on merit. Medvedev is known to start slowly in tournaments, but even if he is not yet at his best here in Miami he surely will be able to win. This match will not last long, expect a dominant performance by Daniil Medvedev as he cruises into the Third Round here at the 2021 Miami Open.
