TennisSection previews the 2021 Dubai Open as Andrey Rublev (2) meets Taylor Fritz (15) in the Third Round on Wednesday, March 17th 2021.
Will Taylor Fritz be able to knock out the man of the moment from the 2021 Dubai Open as he looks to build on that solid victory over Nikoloz Basilashvili? Will Andrey Rublev continue to dominate in ATP 500 tournaments as he looks to extend his winning streak of 21-matches in a row at this level? Both players are in great form, but only one will book a spot in the Quarter-finals. Who will it be?
Taylor Fritz put on a very solid comeback performance in the second round, beating the player who knocked him out of the Semi-finals of the Qatar Open last week, Nikoloz Basilashvili. It looked as if it would have been a repeat of last week when Nikoloz won the first set, but Fritz was able to maintain his composure and eventually get the job done in a third set tiebreak, winning 4-6/6-3/7-6(4). Taylor has great potential on the ATP Tour, and when looking at the young players on the tour this season, he has been right up there with the best. Fritz still has a long way to go to reach the elite of these lot, and he meets one of those elite players here in the Third Round, Andrey Rublev. Can Taylor Fritz cause the upset here and book his spot in the Quarter-finals?
Andrey Rublev cruised through his Second Round match here, beating the up and coming Emil Ruusuvuori in straight set 6-4/6-4. Rublev has been downplaying his achievements of winning the last 4 ATP 500 tourmanents and he said he is most likely going to lose this week. However, I see him as the clear title favourite here, and if he continues to improve on his level in the second round, everyone should fear that he does make it 5 ATP 500 titles in a row. Rublev is great in these conditions as he is able to move quickly around the court, and his such flat balls which speed through the court too fast for his opponents. Rublev now meets Taylor Fritz and I am sure he will make sure he is ready for a tough encounter here in this Third Round match at the Dubai Open.
Andrey Rublev and Taylor Fritz have met twice on the ATP Tour, with them splitting the head to head 1-1. Although the head to head is tight, these two players’ careers have been night and day. Rublev has won 8 titles throughout the last 2 years and he is also continuing to improve and dominating the ATP Tour. Taylor Fritz has his moments where he is in great form, and then has his moments where he is very mediocre. The issue with this matchup is that, even if Taylor Fritz is at his best, he is still nowhere near the level required to beat the likes of Andrey Rublev. I expect this to be a straight sets victory for Andrey Rublev, booking his spot in the Quarter-finals of the Dubai Open.
