Tiafoe escaped with a straight sets win over Marton Fucsovics in the semifinal, but things could have turned out differently had the Hungarian taken any of the six set points he had in the second set tiebreak which he ultimately lost 13-11. It was an incredible end to a gripping battle and Tiafoe will breathe a huge sigh of relief. The American was a favorite in each round this week, but he hasn’t been coasting through his matches and he faces a tricky opponent in Struff.
The big-serving German has advanced into his second final of the season. Struff, who last month reached the Madrid final as a lucky loser, is having the season of his life. And at 33, he knows time is not on his side when it comes to winning titles on the ATP Tour. He’ll have another shot on Sunday after battling back to win 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 against Hubert Hurkacz. Without being sentimental, this has felt like Struff’s title to lose. Yes, he’s not had any eyecatching results on grass in his career, but it’s amazing what confidence can do to a tennis player. He’ll surpass expectations when you least expect it and Struff’s game has clicked into place this week. This is as good an opportunity as any to get his hands on his first ATP title.
