Djokovic vs Etcheverry Prediction
Novak Djokovic and Tomas Martin Etcheverry have not played each other on the ATP Tour, with this first-round match at the Rome Masters being their first official meeting. Djokovic has played in more finals at the Italian Open than in any other tournament in his career with 12, winning the title six times, second only to Rafael Nadal. He is the defending champion and the lead-up to this tournament this time has been far from ideal. Djokovic has battled a persistent elbow injury in his last two clay-court tournaments, making a round-of-16 exit in Monte Carlo and then losing to Dusan Lajovic in the quarterfinals in Banja Luka. Etcheverry has already had a match here, swatting aside French teenage star Luca Van Assche in straight sets. I don’t think Djokovic is throwing caution to the wind simply by playing here. The latest pictures from Djokovic’s practice sessions show that the strapping over his right elbow is off which can only imply that the pain has lessened at the very least and will be in perfect shape to defend his title.
