TennisSection previews the 2022 Paris Masters as Novak Djokovic takes on Maxime Cressy in the second round on Tuesday, November 1st, 2022.
Novak Djokovic will start his Paris Masters title defense against big-serving American Maxime Cressy. The Serbian star has not lost at this stage of the event since 2012, when he was upset by another American in Sam Querrey. Is lightning about to strike twice?
Novak Djokovic will not vie for the year-end No. 1 ranking, but I doubt he will lose too much sleep on that. Djokovic has only played 10 tournaments in 2022 and the one major title he won, did not award ranking points. The Serbian star who sits seventh in the ATP rankings is an impressive 34-6 for the year, winning his last two indoor hard-court events in Tel Aviv and Astana. Djokovic is a six-time champion at the Paris Masters and knows all too well on the danger Maxime Cressy possesses in their second-round bout.
Maxime Cressy was in action in the first round as he knocked out Argentina’s Diego Schwartzman 6-3 6-3 in a one-sided contest. Cressy bullied the diminutive Argentine with his humongous serve. He tallied 12 aces and broke Schwartzman’s serve four times. The American arrived at the Paris Masters on the back of a very poor run of form in the last couple of months. But victory over Schwartzman has given him a dose of energy to take on the sixth-seeded Djokovic.
Novak Djokovic and Maxime Cressy have not played each on the ATP Tour. Tuesday’s meeting at the Paris Masters will be their first official meeting. Djokovic has won this event a record six times and knows the city like the back of his hand. While this match has the makings of a potential banana peel for the Serb, I do expect him to utilize his tactical nous to figure out a way to break Cressy’s serve. Over two potentially long sets, Djokovic will lay out a trap and the American will likely walk into it.
