TennisSection previews the 2022 Montreal Masters as Tommy Paul takes on Dan Evans in the quarterfinals on Friday, August 12th, 2022.

Will Dan Evans beat another American here as he aims to continue showing why he is hard to beat when his slice and his volleys are on point? Will Tommy Paul continue his amazing run after beating Carlos Alcaraz a couple matches ago? Both players know that they have a great chance of getting themselves into the Final here at the 2022 Montreal Masters, but only one will. Who will it be?
Dan Evans showed great prowess in his third round match, beating Taylor Fritz in back to back weeks on hard courts. Evans looked out of the match in the early games of the third set, having to save about 4/5 break points during that period, but once he did, Taylor lost his game and confidence, and Dan Evans kept increasing the intensity. Evans is always tough to play against because he is able to use the backhand slice not only to defend tough shots, but he gets it so low that opponents find it hard to attack against him. Whenever Evans gets the opportunity, he is not afraid of going to the net and get himself on top of the point. This is all good and all, but he will have tough challenge against another tough American in Tommy Paul at the 2022 Montreal Masters.

Tommy Paul has been superb all week, making that incredible comeback against Carlos Alcaraz in the second round, shocking everyone, and then dominating the experienced Marin Cilic in the third round, not giving him the light of day. Tommy is improving week after week and it is great to see because his game style is so varied with the ability to hit with great spin, flat, or even slicing. Tommy Paul will believe in himself and his ability to make it to the semifinals or even the final here at the Montreal Masters, but he won’t find it easy against an in form and determined Dan Evans.
Tommy Paul and Dan Evans have met 1 time before, with Dan leading the head to head 1-0. We cannot really look into that match as they were both nowhere near the level they are currently at. I think this is going to be the match of the day at the Montreal Masters, with little between these guys, making it extremely tough to call. However, one thing gives me confidence in Tommy Paul, and that is the fact that Dan Evans shouldn’t have really won that match against Taylor Fritz, as he was down in every single set, meaning Taylor blew it more than Evans winning it. I expect his luck to run out against Tommy Paul.
