Sebastina Korda will look to put the disappointing semifinal loss in Estoril behind him. He will take on a fellow American in the first round of the Madrid Masters. Can Korda tame the big-serving Reilly Opelka in what could potentially be a serving feast?
Sebastian Korda suffered a heartbreaking defeat to compatriot Frances Tiafoe at this week’s Estoril Open. Korda had one foot in the final when he led Tiafoe 6-4 5-2 in their last four duel. But Tiafoe staged one of the most dramatic comebacks of this 2022 season, saving three match points and winning the second set in a tiebreak. Korda was spent force in the decider as the thought of his collapse lingered in his mind. He was broken to love in the tenth game of the third set and lost the match. His attentions will now turn to the Madrid Masters where he will make his main draw debut.
Reilly Opelka, meanwhile, suffered a shock defeat to Germany’s Oscar Otte. Otte, being cheered by a raucous home support in Munich, upstaged the big-serving American, winning 7-6 6-2 in the first round. Opelka, who won his first tour-level title on clay in Houston last month (a result that saw him crack the Top 20 and peaking at career high World No. 17), will be keen to atone for that mishap, but he does not have a particularly generous opener at the Madrid Masters.
Sebastian Korda and Reilly Opelka have not played each other on the ATP Tour. Monday’s match at the Madrid Masters will be their first official meeting. Korda and Opelka are both very good servers, with Opelka probably just shading it in terms of effectiveness and efficiency. With Korda coming off a very busy week in Estoril, Opelka might look to exploit those tired legs of his younger compatriot.
