Will Matteo Berrettini get the win? Will Tommy Paul pull off the upset? This will be an interesting one, where the fifth seed takes on a tough first test. Who will move on to the Round of 16 at the 2022 Acapulco Open?
Matteo Berrettini just suffered a tough loss to Carlos Alcaraz in Rio, losing in 3 sets but really not showing his best tennis, especially the tennis that got him to the semifinals in Australia. Wwe are back on the hard courts though, and I don’t think Berrettini is primed for an upset, I expect him to make a relatively deep run here in Acapulco for sure. But his first test will be quite challenging coming up against Tommy Paul who is in good form. I think Berrettini will eventually outlast him though to take the match and move through to the Round of 16 at the 2022 Acapulco Open.
Tommy Paul has been playing some good tennis, but unfortunately for him he’ll likely not be able to do much as he comes up against world no.6 Matteo Berrettini. Paul has a solid game, but he doesn’t really have any standout weapons, if he isn’t able to expose Berrettini’s only real major weakness (the topspin backhand), then he won’t be able to do much. Simply due to Berrettini’s match in Rio, I will give a set to Paul but I expect Berrettini to take this one and book a spot in the last 16 of the 2022 Acapulco Open.
Matteo Berrettini and Tommy Paul have never met before, with this being their first career meeting. As I mentioned already, Paul doesn’t really possess a big weapon that he can attack with. He’s more so just a solid player from all areas, but that isn’t enough to take down a guy like Matteo. He will have to play quite aggressive if he wants to win, which I think he is capable of doing, but in the end Berrettini will take the win, perhaps even in straight sets although likely with a tussle to move on to the next stage of the 2022 Acapulco Open.
