Will Hubert Hurkacz win? Or will Lorenzo Musetti pull off the upset? This should be an entertaining second-round match at the Rotterdam Open as the young Italian seeks back-to-back wins for the first win since last year’s French Open.
Hubert Hurkacz needed an hour and 32 minutes to see off wild card Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in straight sets at the Rotterdam Open. Tsonga produced a gallant effort as he went toe-to-toe with the Polish No. 1 for most of the match. Hurkacz needed to stay on his toes in the first set when he saved a break point the seventh game on his serve. That set the tonic for Hurkacz to go on and win the first set against run the of play when he broke Tsonga in the 10th game after the Frenchman misfired on his forehand. The second set stayed on serve and went into a tiebreak. This time Tsonga fluffed his lines at two set point opportunities and Hurkacz made him pay hefty price by closing out the match.
Lorenzo Musetti, meanwhile, secured one of his best wins in this embryonic tennis season when he beat an in-form Mikael Ymer. Musetti is looking to push for the reset button as he aims to get his career back on track. The Italian delivered a back-to-the-wall display against the Swede, using his flair and court craft to outsmart the young Swede in a baseline battle. He has now set up a third career meeting against Hubert Hurkacz at the Rotterdam Open.
The head-to-head between Hubert Hurkacz and Lorenzo Musetti is tied at 1-1. But it is pertinent to note that note Musetti’s win over the Pole camer via a retirement in Rome last year. Their only completed match was at Wimbledon where Hurkacz dominated the young Italian to win in straight sets. Musetti has put himself in prime position to challenge after a morale-boosting win over Ymer. The 19-year-old is a fine shot-maker and will use his court awareness to disrupt Hurkacz’s rhythm. But at this moment, the Pole looks well equipped to outsmart the tactful Italian.
