WTA Finals 2021: Anett Kontaveit vs. Garbine Muguruza Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2021 WTA Finals as Anett Kontaveit takes on Garbine Muguruza in the Round Robin stage on Sunday, November 14th, 2021.

Will Anett Kontaveit extend her winning streak to 13 matches? Or will Garbine Muguruza end sequence at 12? Kontaveit is guaranteed a top 2 finish in Group Teotihuacan, leaving Muguruza in a must-win match to join her in the last four. Can the Spaniard produce another big result under the lights?

Anett Kontaveit has now won a dozen matches in the past month ahead of her second meeting of the season against Garbine Muguruza. Not only that, but the Estonian has resembled a willow tree at the WTA Finals – unshakeable, unbreakable and seemingly unbeatable. The only logical subplot right now is that whoever wants to win the title this weekend, will most likely have to run through Kontaveit. That is easier said than done. In her previous match against Pliskova, Kontaveit came into the contest on the back of a 3-0 deficit in the head-to-head. But the manner of her 57-minute dissection of former World No. 1 Pliskova was something to behold. Pliskova was the WTA’s ace leader in 2021, but she only averaged about 63% first-serve points and only fired four aces in this match.

Garbine Muguruza, for her part, produced a spectacular comeback to topple Barbora Krejcikova in three sets at the 2021 WTA Finals. And she has given herself a massive lift heading to Sunday’s match against Anett Kontaveit. Muguruza was a set away from elimination after trailing Krejcikova by a set. But having made substantial improvement in her first serve (from a lowly 58% landed first serves to 71%), she deservedly won the second set. And the Spaniard found an extra ounce of energy from the cheering crowd, breaking Krejcikova’s serve in a 12-minute third game in the decider.

The head-to-head between Anett Kontaveit and Garbine Muguruza is currently locked at two-wins apiece. But Muguruza will need no reminding of the last time the pair stepped on the court. Kontaveit handed the Spaniard an absolute mauling, romping to a 6-1 6-1 win in the quarterfinals of the Kremlin Cup. The surprising thing is that the Estonian has not looked remotely close to losing a tennis match in the past month. That makes Muguruza’s task slightly harder on Sunday. However, she may have a little bit of breather by events from the first match of the day. Worst case scenario for Muguruza is to hope Krejcikova wins, and she manages to at least take a set off Kontaveit. That permutation should be enough to seal her place in the last four.
