TennisSection previews the 2021 Washington Open as Taylor Fritz takes on Denis Kudla in the Round of 32 on Wednesday, August 4th, 2021.
Will Taylor Fritz get back on the right path after a little rough patch with a nice win? Will the veteran in Denis Kudla show us what he’s still got and take out the youngster? This will be a very entertaining encounter, with two Americans, a veteran vs a next gen going head to head. Will Fritz cruise through, or can Kudla trouble his superior peer and try to fight for a spot in the Round of 16 at the 2021 Washington Open?
Taylor Fritz had a knee surgery one month prior to Wimbledon, and then managed to make the third round, losing a tight match to Alexander Zverev, the winner of Olympic Gold. It was definitely a great story and shows that he’s only improving and will be a force later on in his career. He has a tremendous service and has a solid all-around game, I think he can be a very good aggressive player, and just needs to find that right style for him. Denis Kudla is a great test, having pushed world number one Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon. He’s a solid player himself, and despite some trouble lately, he can be a real problem, so if Fritz can get past him, I like his chances to go deep in the 2021 Washington Open.
Denis Kudla is coming into this match with not a lot of confidence, considering who his opponent is, it’ll be a tough match-up for him, having to deal with Taylor Fritz’s firepower will be a tough task. However, he can serve well, and that makes him dangerous, if he’s able to stay steady on serve, I see no reason for him not being able to defeat Taylor. It’ll be hard for him, but if Fritz doesn’t capitalize on break points, then he can generate momentum and get through. Today in his tight match against Feliciano Lopez, he served at only 53%. This will not be enough against the quality of Fritz, unless he’s having a bad day, it’ll be a tough one for sure, but given he serves well, I think he can challenge Fritz for a spot in the Round of 16 at the 2021 Washington Open.
Taylor Fritz and Denis Kudla have met once before, with Denis Kudla leading the head to head 1-0. They played once in Australia 2 years prior. This win doesn’t mean much, considering it was very close and when Fritz was rather unknown on the ATP Tour. However, he still can make the match close or even win it if he holds himself up well on serve and serves better than he did today, because 53% most certainly will not be enough. Fritz on the other hand, should feel great about himself if he can get through this one with ease. As long as he’s able to stay aggressive and capitalize on the opportunities I am sure he’ll get, he should get a nice easy win to move on at the 2021 Washington Open.
