TennisSection previews the 2021 Atlanta Open as Taylor Fritz (5) meets John Isner (6) in the Semi-Finals on Saturday July 31st, 2021.
An exciting “All-Amerian” battle awaits us as Taylor Fritz faces John Isner in the Semi-Finals here at the 2021 Atlanta Open. Their head to head is even at 2-2 and they are both very close in the world rankings, setting the stage for an extremely close match. Who will get the win and advance to the Final here at home?
Taylor Fritz is the fifth seed here at the 2021 Atlanta Open and is currently ranked #42 in the ATP world rankings. The young American is very experienced despite his age and has a good opportunity to win his first title of the year. Fritz has been having a solid season, reaching four Semi-Finals and will have his eyes firmly set on the title here in Atlanta. He has a good shot of winning here, but one has to wonder if fatigue is a factor. The American is coming off a three set battle against fellow American Reilly Opelka, winning in a third set tiebreaker. If he is 100% this match against John Isner will be a tough one, and his serve and forehand will have to be clicking for him to win here.
John Isner is currently ranked #35 on the ATP Tour and is the sixth seed here at the 2021 Atlanta Open. The big serving American has also had a similar path to the Semis as his opponent Taylor Fritz, prevailing in a tight three setter against fellow American Jack Sock in the Quarter-Finals. Isner has been having a poor season so far, but a title here would go a long way to making up for it. As always, he will be heavily reliant on his serve to get him through here. Fritz has an advantage when it comes to baseline play but if Isner is serving well he will be especially tough to beat with his immense experience. Isner may not move well, but makes up for it as he is very strong tactically so this is a very even match here.
This will be the fifth meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour, and the head to head is tied at 2-2. All four of their previous matches have been very close, and I expect no difference here. Both men have played very well and deserve to reach the Final, but only one can. After considering everything, I am backing John Isner to get the win here. While the two men are very evenly matched, the five-time Atlanta Champion Isner’s experience will be key here, and I expect him to edge out a three set thriller. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Fritz win, but the smart money is on the veteran advancing here.
