TennisSection previews the 2021 Umag Open as Richard Gasquet (4) takes on Daniel Altmaier (Q) in the Semi-Finals on Saturday, July 24th, 2021.
Will Daniel Altmaier cause another upset this week to make it his 4th upset in a row and give himself a shot at his maiden ATP Tour title? Will Richard Gasquet show the German that he is the top dog in this match and that his experience is going to bring him over the line? Both players have played well all week, but only one will make their way to the Final of the 2020 Umag Open. Who will it be?
Daniel Altmaier was able to cruise through his Quarter-Final match against Dusan Lajovic, beating the No.2 seed in straight sets 6-2/6-4. Dusan Lajovic did not show up to play in the first set and Daniel Altmaier used his power and incredible one-hand backhand to stop him from gaining momentum. This then went into the second set and Lajovic was under too much pressure and he was not able to mount the comeback. Daniel Altmaier has won all 3 matches this week as the underdog, but now he meets his toughest opponent in terms of experience and big titles in Richard Gasquet.
Richard Gasquet also cruised through his Quarter-Final match, beating Damir Dzumhur in straight sets 6-3/7-6. Richard Gasquet is showing us some solid tennis and he is able to maintain his composure during tight games. Richard has so much experience and he is definitely looking at the draw here knowing that he is now in a very solid position to potentially win his 16th career title on the ATP Tour. Richard Gasquet will know that Daniel Altmaier is in strong form this week so he cannot take him lightly, but he will know he is expected to win this match.
Richard Gasquet and Daniel Altmaier have never met before, with Richard Gasquet leading the head to head 1-0. They met a couple months ago in Parma on clay where Gasquet won in straight sets 6-3/6-3. Although Daniel Altmaier has been in great form all week, he is still nowhere near the level of Gasquet. Gasquet’s one-handed backhand is 10x better than Altmaier’s and he will return everything Altmaier sends him with interest. Daniel might get a set under his belt due to the momentum he built this week, but Richard Gasquet will make his way to the Final of the 2021 Umag Open.
