Hall of Fame Open 2021: Kevin Anderson vs. Jack Sock Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2021 Hall of Fame Open as Kevin Anderson meets Jack Sock in the quarterfinals on Thursday, July 15th, 2021.

Will Jack Sock follow up his stunner of a win to make the semifinals? Will Kevin Anderson have some success over the hometown hero? This match promises to be a very good one as two popular veterans of the ATP Tour collide. Who will move on to the semifinals at the 2021 Hall of Fame Open?

Jack Sock pulled off an amazing win over the third seed Yoshihito Nishioka, 6-2 6-3. While I expected him to give Nishioka trouble, I did not expect him to win, especially in the manner that he did. His opponent in Kevin Anderson is a dangerous opponent on the grass, having made the finals of Wimbledon in 2018. Despite his great win, I would not put him as the favorite to win the match, I do think he has a good shot though, especially if he can stay solid on serve. I think what he needs to do is find that aggressive tennis that he used today and carry it over to his match vs. Kevin. If he manages to make minimal unforced errors and doesn’t waste any chances on second serves, I like his chances, especially if it goes to tiebreakers.

Kevin Anderson has been extremely solid throughout the tournament, not even giving his opponent a single break point opportunity in his last match. Hitting barrages of aces, and hardly any double faults, with extremely high numbers on his first serve, it will be tough for Jack Sock. I think all Kevin needs to do is play super aggressively on the return, he’s a big guy, and considering that Sock is older now and will want to get to the net and finish points quickly himself, he’ll need to take that out of the equation by using his power to really attack all the second serves he gets. Especially since Jack’s service numbers were a little down, at only 55% on the first serve, I think Kevin will have a lot of opportunities to get into some games.

Jack Sock and Kevin Anderson have played four times before, with the head to head being tied at 2-2. Their last meeting was four years ago, and none of them were straightforward, I do think either player can win the match. However, in my opinion, the winner of the match mainly rests on Kevin Anderson’s shoulders, if he puts up another serving clinic like he did, I see him going through to the semifinals of the 2021 Hall of Fame Open.
