TennisSection previews the 2021 Swedish Open as Cristian Garin (2) meets Pedro Martinez in the Round of 16 on Wednesday July 14th, 2021.
Second seeded Cristian Garin of Chile faces the unseeded Spaniard Pedro Martinez here at the 2021 Swedish Open in Bastad, and he will be looking to take the title as one of the main contenders. The Chilean has been having an inconsistent season, but always performs on clay, making him the big favorite here. Can the young Spaniard Pedro Martinez cause the big upset and send the second seed packing?
Cristian Garin is the second seed here at the 2021 Swedish Open in Bastad, and is currently ranked #18 on the ATP Tour. The Chilean has built a reputation as one of the very best clay court players on tour over the past few seasons, and has already claimed five ATP titles on the surface, including one this year. He has been having a mixed year so far, and will be happy to get back on his preferred surface to find form. His last two tournaments were the French Open and Wimbledon, where he performed well, but he undoubtedly will be hoping to build some momentum heading up to the bigger ATP-1000 events as that is where he has traditionally struggled. Garin will be one of the big favorites to lift the title here along with Casper Ruud, and he enters this match against Pedro Martinez as the massive favorite.
Pedro Martinez is unseeded here at the 2021 Swedish Open and is #95 on the ATP Tour. The Spaniard is coming off a solid performance at Wimbledon, where he defeated Gael Monfils before losing to his current opponent Cristian Garin in four tough sets. While he only reached the Third Round, that was particularly impressive as he has always been considered a clay court player. However, he is back on his strongest surface now, but has run into a difficult draw as he is facing one of the best clay courters in the world. Martinez is a very solid baseliner who plays very aggressive tennis, but it is unlikely that he has enough firepower to hit through the Chilean’s defenses. He is capable of putting up a strong showing, but is the big underdog here against Cristian Garin, and it will take the match of his life to win.
This will be the second time that the two players have met on the ATP Tour, with Garin winning their only meeting at Wimbledon a couple of weeks ago. That match was a very close four setter, with both men playing well. Now that they are both back on their preferred surface of clay, I expect a similarly intense battle, but this time I do expect Cristian Garin to have more comfortable win. He is one of the top 7-10 clay court players in the entire world in my opinion, and anything less than a tournament win for him here will be a massive disappointment. Pedro Martinez is a very solid player and will fight his hardest, but ultimately the Chilean will win and advance to the Quarter-Finals here at the 2021 Swedish Open in Bastad.
