TennisSection previews the 2021 Wimbledon Championships as Matteo Berrettini (7) meets Aljaz Bedene in the Round of 32 on Saturday, July 3rd 2021.
Will Aljaz Bedene continue to dominate in his matches as he aims to cause a very big upset to get himself in a strong place to potentially make the Quarter-finals? Will Matteo Berrettini continue impressing on grass as he continues to cement himself as a real contender if he is able to make it to the business end of the tournament? Both players will come out here and give it their best, but only one will make their way to the Round of 16 of the 2021 Wimbledon Championships. Who will it be?
Aljaz Bedene dominated in his match against Yoshihito Nishioka in the Round of 64, beating the Japanese star in straight sets 6-1/6-0/6-2. This was a very good performance from Aljaz Bedene and he will use this to build his confidence coming into this Round of 32 match. However, he will also have to recognise that Nishioka just came off an extremely tiring 5-set win over John Isner the day before and he was not at his best. Aljaz will have to raise his level a lot if he is to cause the big upset against Matteo Berrettini and give himself a strong chance to make his way to the Quarter-finals as he would either meet Ivashka or Thompson in the Round of 16 of the 2021 Wimbledon Championships.
Matteo Berrettini came through a straight sets win over Botic Van de Zandschulp in the Round of 64, beating him 6-3/6-4/7-6. Although this was a straight sets win, it was not as dominant as many of us expected. Matteo needs to find a way to get on top of these matches a bit faster than usual as the more time he wastes on court in these early rounds against lesser opponents, the less recovery and training time he has for his next opponents. Matteo will now have to raise his level as he meets a very tough, but underrated, opponent in Aljaz Bedene who has been cruising here at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships.
Matteo Berrettini and Aljaz Bedene have met 3 times before, with Matteo Berrettini leading the head to head 2-1. They last met here at Wimbledon in 2019 where Matteo won in 4 sets. In 2 of their 3 matches, Bedene has been able to steal a set. I see the same happening here. Matteo has been in great form on grass this year, but he has not been as dominant as I would like here at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships. Aljaz on the other hand has. I still see Matteo winning this one and making his way through to the Round of 16, but Aljaz will win a set when Matteo eventually lets his guard down slightly.
