Carlos Alcaraz came through a very hard thought 5-set match against Yasutaka Uchiyama, winning 6-3/6-7/6-2/6-3/6-2. Alcaraz was on the backfoot many times during the match, but he was able to get a very solid win under his belt in the end. Carlos Alcaraz will not be used to playing full 5 set matches just yet in his career so this will be a learning curve for him. Can the young Spaniard recover in time and get ready to potentially have to play another 5 setter against Daniil Medvedev is he is here determined to cause the huge upset?
Daniil Medvedev played very well in his opening round match against Jan-Lennard Struff, beating the German in 4 sets 6-4/6-1/4-6/7-6. This was a statement win for Medvedev as he had lost to Struff in straight sets two weeks ago on grass, and now he was able to dominate for the majority of the match. Medvedev will want to improve on this level as he knows that he should be making it very far into the second week here at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships, but he needs to prevent the young Carlos Alcaraz from causing the upset early on.
Daniil Medvedev and Carlos Alcaraz have never met before, with this being their first meeting. Alcaraz is a good player and can perform strongly against good opponents. However, we are talking about the World No.2 here. Medvedev has been on a roll over the last week on grass and he will not allow himself to waste time and lose momentum against a much lower ranked opponent. Medvedev will get this win under his belt easily I believe and will make his way to the Round of 32 of the 2021 Wimbledon Championships.
