This match promises to be an interesting one to see if Aryna Sabalenka is able to produce the level on grass which got her to where she is today. Can she move on to the Round of 64 at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships and avoid the upset?
Monica Niculescu should be coming into this match with a little bit of confidence, seeing as she’s gotten a good number of match wins before the tournament and plenty of practice. Of course, Aryna Sabalenka remains the heavy favorite to move on to the next round, however, out of every possible upset that could occur in the early stages, this isn’t one of the most unlikely ones. Even still, the level gap between her and her opponent is rather large, she will need to play her absolute best tennis to be able to take Aryna Sabalenka down.
Aryna Sabalenka is coming into the tournament with less confidence than she would like, recently not being able to find good form in the past couple of months despite good results early on in the clay season. She got some match practice on the grass at the Eastbourne Open, falling in her third match there in 3 sets despite winning a set with a bagel. Even still, I expect her to start strong at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships and roll past Monica Niculescu.
Aryna Sabalenka and Monica Niculescu have met one time before, with Aryna Sabalenka leading their head to head 1-0. Their only meeting came at the Shenzhen Open 3 years earlier, so this factor doesn’t really indicate anything, but it certainly doesn’t help Monica Niculescu, who will need all the help she can get to pull off the upset.
