TennisSection previews the 2021 Eastbourne Open as Alex de Minaur (2) meets Lorenzo Sonego (3) in the Final on Saturday, June 26th 2021.
Which of these two strong performing players in 2021 will get their second title of the year under their belt? Will it be the fiery Italian, Lorenzo Sonego, who has been in great form for the last 2 months? Will it be Alex de Minaur who is looking to shine more now that the clay court season is over? Both players are more than capable to win this match if they are at their best, but only one will lift the trophy here at the 2021 Eastbourne Open. Who will it be?
Lorenzo Sonego came through a 3 set match in the Semi-finals, beating the player no one expected to come this far, Max Purcell, 6-1/3-6/6-1. Lorenzo Sonego took his foot off the gas in the second set because he won the first set so easily and he thought it would be an easy match afterwards. Once he realised that he needed to play at his best, he gave it more effort and was able to win the third set and match. Lorenzo Sonego cannot afford to let his guard down like this again when ahead, especially as he now meets Alex de Minaur in the Final as he aims to lift his 2nd title of the year.
Alex de Minaur cruised through his Semi-final match against Soonwoo Kwon, beating the South Korean in straight sets 6-3/7-6. Alex will be very happy with that performance, being able to now at least make a Semi-final of an ATP 500 and the Final of an ATP 250 in back to back weeks on grass. Alex de Minaur started the year off so well, but then went down in form as the clay season came around. Now that he is back on grass, I am sure he will be willing to give it his all, especially here at the Viking International where he wants to lift his second title this year.
Alex de Minaur and Lorenzo Sonego have met 1 time before, with Alex de Minaur leading the head to head 1-0. They met late last year at the Paris Masters where Alex won in straight sets 6-3/7-5. If this was on a clay court, I would have given the edge to Lorenzo Sonego. However, we are on a faster surface, and when we compare their performance in their last match, Alex was more dominant. Lorenzo can put up a fight, but he will have to be at his best and more to beat a very in form Alex on grass. Alex will lift his 2nd title of the year at the 2021 Eastbourne Open and gain a lot of momentum heading into Wimbledon.
