TennisSection previews the 2021 French Open as Maria Sakkari (17) meets Barbora Krejcikova in the Semi-finals on Thursday, June 10th 2021.
Will Barbora Krejcikova be able to continue riding the high of saving those set points in the first set against Gauff to eventually win the match and then win this Semi-final? Will Maria Sakkari make it another huge win in her career as she finally has her huge breakthrough in a big tournament here at Roland Garros? Both players have played some amazing tennis all tournament at the 2021 French Open, but only one will make their way to the Final. Who will it be?
Barbora Krejcikova started the match out in the Quarter-finals against Coco Gauff in slow fashion, going down a break early on. However, the fight she showed for the rest of the set was amazing, breaking back not once, but twice in the first set (even when Coco Gauff was serving 5-3 for the set). Then, in the tiebreak, she was also able to save many set points on Coco Gauff’s serve to get the first set under her belt. That was super important for her because once she did that, Coco, who is still young, lost it mentally, and gave her a nice 4-game cushion to win the second set with, even though she broke back once. This allowed Barbora to win 7-6/6-3. Although Barbora Krejcikova won, she was also handed this victory at times and didn’t dominate as much as her next opponent Maria Sakkari, did.
Maria Sakkari put on a superb performance in the Quarter-finals against the defending champion, and overwhelming title favourite here at Roland Garros, Iga Swiatek, beating her in straight sets 6-4/6-4. Maria Sakkari started the match off slowly, going down a break as well, but she fought back in great fashion and was able to win it in the end. After this, Iga Swiatek had to get the medical trainer out to sort out her right thigh as she was hurting, so this gave Maria Sakkari even more confidence in her game and her ability to get this win under her belt. Maria has so much raw power and she was hitting lines consistently, which will give her confidence now that she meets Barbora Krejcikova in the Semi-finals.
Maria Sakkari and Barbora Krejcikova have met 2 times before, with Barbora Krejcikova leading the head to head 2-0. They met earlier this year in Dubai where Krejcikova won in straight sets 6-2/7-6. Although Barbora got that win under her belt, I think Maria has made leaps and bounds in her form since then. Maria has faced tougher competition here at the 2021 French Open, and she has won against them in such dominant fashion. Barbora, on the other hand, was handed a lot of free points in her Quarter-final and didn’t deserve the win as much as Maria. I think Maria gets to the Final here and we will see if she can get her maiden Grand Slam under her belt.
