TennisSection previews the 2021 Belgrade Open as Federico Delbonis (8) meets Alex Molcan in the Semi-Finals on Friday May 28th, 2021.
Yet another surprising Semi-Final is upon us here at the 2021 Belgrade Open. Eighth seeded Argentine Federico Delbonis will face unseeded Alex Molcan of Slovakia in a Semi that no-one would have predicted. Both men have played very well his week and fully deserve to be here. Who will get the win and advance to their first Final of the season?
Federico Delbonis is currently ranked #52 in the ATP world rankings and is the eighth seed here at the 2021 Belgrade Open. The Argentine has enjoyed a solid season thus far, and boasts a 22-8 record on his preferred clay surface. While some of those wins have come at Challenger level, it still is something that he can be proud of, and he will be filled with confidence here in his second Semi-Final of the year. While he has not been at his best so far this week, he has been finding ways to win, with two hard-fought three set wins in the early rounds before getting a walkover to the Semis when Roberto Carballes Baena pulled out due to injury. Delbonis will have been happy to get the rest after the two long matches, and should be well rested here as he takes on the red-hot Alex Molcan.
Alex Molcan truly has been a surprise package this week here at the 2021 Belgrade Open, and has dominated all opponents that he has faced so far with his attacking baseline game. After coming through the Qualifying Rounds he has blitzed his way to his first ATP Semi-Final, losing only a handful of games in the process. Despite being ranked over 200 spots behind his opponent Federico Delbonis, it is hard to call Molcan the underdog given his amazing form. It is amazing to think that he had never won an ATP match before this week, and if he continues playing as he has, he certainly is capable of causing yet another upset and reaching the first Final of his young career.
This is the first time that the two players will face each other on the ATP Tour, and their head to head record stands at 0-0. This is a very difficult match to predict. Federico Delbonis is much higher ranked than Alex Molcan, but the young Solvakian has been playing out of his mind this week. After winning his first ever ATP match, he went on to score the Tour’s first double bagel in 2021, and has been on a rampage so far here at the 2021 Belgrade Open. I am going to go out on a limb and pick the youngster to cause yet another upset here in Belgrade, and reach the Final where he will very likely face world number one Novak Djokovic. This match certainly is a coin-toss, but I am going with the red-hot Molcan to get the victory here.
