This is a matchup between two players that have started the 2021 season off strongly. However, one is ranked much higher than the other and it seems like a mismatch on paper. However, we know that is not always the case. Alexander Zverev is the second seed here at the 2021 Acapulco Open and considered one of the main contenders for the title. His opponent, Laslo Djere will surely be out to cause a sensational upset and build on his solid start to the year. Who will get the win here and advance to the Quarter-Finals here in Mexico?
Alexander Zverev is one of the biggest threats for the title here at the 2021 Acapulco Open. He has started the year strongly, and has matured greatly as a player. Now ranked #7 in the ATP World rankings, he has his eyes firmly set on breaking back into the top 5 in the world and competing for Grand Slam titles. The German star was impressive in his First Round win over the young Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz, dominating from start to finish and claiming a 6-3, 6-1 win. After a surprising Opening Round loss in Rotterdam last week, Zverev seems fully focused and ready to get his season back on track. He enters this match as the huge favorite over opponent Laslo Djere of Serbia and will be supremely confident of getting the win here.
Laslo Djere is currently ranked #54 in the world, but has been as high as #27 just a few years ago. He has started the season well, however all of his good results have come on clay, his preferred surface. In fact, he has lost seven out of his past eight hard court matches and will not be relishing being back on the surface. Despite his poor hard court form, he was impressive in his First Round win over American Steve Johnson, which would have gone a long way to rebuilding his confidence. Djere is a very talented player with a strong baseline game, however he is coming up against one of the best in the world on this surface in Alexander Zverev. He enters this match as the huge underdog, and it would take a herculean effort for him to win here at the 2021 Acapulco Open.
This will be the first meeting between the two players, and the head to head record stands at 0-0. While Djere is a very competent player, it is unlikely that he will able to bother Alexander Zverev on this surface. The German star has played very aggressive tennis so far in 2021, and I expect that to continue here at the 2021 Acapulco Open in Mexico. His serve was very impressive in his First Round win and when that is clicking, he is very hard to beat. For Laslo Djere to be competitive here he would have to be very high on confidence and in good form, which is not the case now. I expect Alexander Zverev to cruise to victory and advance to the Quarter-Finals without any issues.
