Grabher won her opening match at the Italian Open in a hustle against home wild card Nuria Brancaccio. It’s never an easy proposition taking on home players in a first match regardless of their ranking and Grabher felt the full force of Brancaccio being cheered by a near-partisan crowd and looking to impress at WTA 1000 level. At the same time, she did well to get over the line, regaining control of the match by breaking Brancaccio’s serve three times. I’m amazed to see Grabher instilled as a sizable underdog here considering her easy win over Teichmann. The Swiss lefty got a bye in the first round and has a modest 11-11 record for the season. In her last seven matches, Teichmann has won twice, and none against a player ranked inside the top 100.
