Miami Open 2022: Nick Kyrgios vs. Fabio Fognini Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2022 Miami Open as Nick Kyrgios takes on Fabio Fognini in the third round on Sunday, March 27th, 2022.

There is growing belief that Nick Kyrgios might go all the way this fortnight at the Miami Open. However, it is always tough predicting Kyrgios’ matches simply because of his headspace. And he will now face another unpredictable and flamboyant opponent in Fabio Fognini. Who will prevail?

Nick Kyrgios has looked in terrific form in the past couple weeks in singles competition. He has won six of his last seven matches including his second-round beatdown of Andrey Rublev. He tore the fifth-seeded Rublev to shreds, winning 6-3 6-0 in next to no time. Kyrgios credited his overall return game for that mammoth win, as he broke the Russian five times. The Australian who entered the Miami Open with a wild card has now earned three Top 10 wins during the North American hard court swing, and should be one of the favorites to win this tournament from this juncture.

Fabio Fognini, meanwhile, needed to show grit and perseverance in his second-round match at the Miami Open. The number 31 seed battled past Taro Daniel of Japan in a taxing three-setter that lasted nine minutes shy of three hours. Fognini rallied from dropping the first set to win 6-7 6-2 7-6 and picked up just his third match win on a hard court in 2022. Fognini, who withdrew from Indian Wells due to illness, has not shown any fitness concerns and will face the in-form Nick Kyrgios in a shot-making spectacle at the Miami Open.

Nick Kyrgios leads Fabio Fognini 1-0 in their head-to-head. Incidentally, that meeting took place at the Miami Open in 2018, where Kyrgios ran out a comfortable straight-set winner. The odds, once more, are clearly against Fognini on Sunday. He enters the match on the back of a grueling three-setter against Daniel. And taking into consideration Fognini’s recent withdrawal at Indian Wells, he is unlikely to challenge over vast stretches in the match. Kyrgios is looking unstoppable on current form and should roll into the fourth round unscathed.
