TennisSection previews the 2022 Sydney Open as Fabio Fognini takes on Brandon Nakashima in the second round on Wednesday, January 12th, 2022.
Will Fabio Fognini get another good win under his belt to get his 2022 season going as he aims to find some form before the Australian Open? Will Brandon Nakashima show us why he is one of the most promising youngsters on the ATP Tour, especially in these hot hard court conditions like we have here at the 2022 Sydney Open? who will make their way to the Quarter-Finals?
Brandon Nakashima had to fight through a tight opening round match, beating the experienced Laslo Djere in straight sets 7-6 / 7-6. Brandon was not great on the return game throughout the match, not being able to really dominate as you would expect him to. However, when it came to the tiebreaks, he stepped his game up and dominated the rallies. Brandon needs to be able to find that level throughout the set, not just towards the end. As, one day or another, he will meet a player in a big moment and he won’t be as solid as he could be. Will he beat another more experienced opponent here at the 2022 Sydney Open in Fabio Fognini?
Fabio Fognini played a strong first match of the 2022 season, beating the always tough and hard hitting, Daniel Altmaier, in straight sets 6-3 / 7-5. Fabio was expecting to meet Nick Kyrgios, so he was obviously prepared for a tougher opponent, but he did show some good promise early on. Fabio will come out here in this second round match at the 2022 Sydney Open against Brandon Nakashima, but we do not know how he will be feeling. Will Fabio take this match too lightly which can hurt him as we often see, or will he come out and know that he needs to be ready to fight?
Fabio Fognini and Brandon Nakashima have met 1 time before, with Brandon Nakashima leading the head to head 1-0. They met about 5 months ago at the San Diego Open where Brandon won in 3 sets. Those were very similar conditions to these here at the 2022 Sydney Open, and I think that we will see a similar result again. Fabio is obviously more experienced and he can have some amazing moments on court. However, when it comes to who has shown more promise in the last year or so, Brandon has performed at a higher level. I expect a tight one, with the youngster coming through victorious.
